Abstract

Henri Focillon, in this remarkable presentation delivered at the 1921 Art History Congress in Paris, here translated, proposed a historiographical approach by demonstrating how Japanese printmaking profoundly influenced Western art from the 19th century onward. The author examines the interactions between Europe and Asia throughout history, emphasizing that these two continents did not evolve in isolation but were spaces of philosophical, artistic, and cultural exchange. In the 19th century, this influence was amplified by the arrival of Japanese prints in Europe, which aroused significant interest among artists and art enthusiasts. Focillon noted that artists such as Whistler, Monet, and Manet drew inspiration from the innovative aesthetics of Oriental art. The presence of Japanese printmaking reveals how cultural contact can create new visual languages and expand artistic perception.
